Spanish police rescued dozens of animals from an illegal breeding farm.

In the Spanish province of A Coruña (Galicia), officers of the Civil Guard dismantled an illegal animal breeding center where hundreds of pets were kept in horrific conditions. The investigation began after an inspection carried out by the Seprona patrol and the Fiscal y Fronteras unit from Noia.

During the search at the premises in Mesón do Vento, municipality of Ordes, authorities discovered 250 animal bodies — mainly dogs and birds, some of which were in an advanced state of decomposition or even mummified. Among the dead were 28 Chihuahuas and dozens of other small breeds.
At the same time, officers found 171 live animals in extremely poor condition. Due to the lack of food and water, many had tried to survive by feeding on the remains of their companions. The premises were completely covered in excrement, and the cages and kennels showed no sign of sanitary maintenance. Among the rescued animals were dogs, chinchillas, miniature horses, chickens, ducks, and exotic protected species listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention — including two pink cockatoos and two macaws (one red, one blue and yellow).
All surviving animals were immediately removed and transferred to specialized recovery centers. On-site, officers also found a large amount of veterinary medicines and professional equipment without licenses, much of it expired. The person responsible for the “farm” was arrested, and the case has been referred to the Ordes court. The investigation is considering possible charges of animal cruelty, illegal possession of protected species, and unauthorized veterinary practice.

The inspection was carried out with the participation of specialists from the Galician Department of Natural Heritageand veterinarians from SERGAS, the regional Health Service of Galicia.
