In the Italian city of Bari, a van carrying 46 puppies without documents was stopped
On 21 September 2025, the Bari traffic police (Polizia di Stato), during targeted checks, stopped a vehicle carrying 46 puppies of different breeds and sizes. The animals were being transported without the necessary documentation for cross-border travel and in conditions that did not comply with European regulations.
The inspection was carried out by two patrols of the Bari Traffic Police as part of regular checks on the safety of international transport. During the inspection of the van, officers found the puppies confined in cramped conditions, without compliance with safety and animal welfare standards. A veterinary service was called to the scene to check the health of the puppies, confirm the presence of microchips and provide primary medical assistance.
The driver of the vehicle received an administrative fine of €8,460 for violating international road transport regulations. The van was seized and placed under administrative detention for three months.
According to the police, the van had arrived from one of the Eastern European countries and was heading to Germany. However, the exact route, through which checkpoint or port the puppies ended up in Bari, has not yet been specified. As of today, there are no confirmed details about the country of origin of the animals, the registration number of the van or its country of registration.
Such cases once again highlight the seriousness of the problem of illegal puppy trade in Europe. Animals become victims of the “black market,” where quick profit is prioritised over their health and safety. This is why regular checks on roads and in ports are so important — they help save lives and prevent animal suffering.
We will continue to follow the development of the situation and update this news as soon as new official information becomes available.
