Traveling with Your Pet by Train: Simple, Comfortable, and Accessible

Summer is approaching — and with it comes vacation season. But what if you want to travel and have no one to leave your pet with? Not everyone owns a car, and flying isn’t always an option. Trains are a great alternative: comfortable, eco-friendly, and increasingly pet-friendly.
In many European countries, you can easily take your cat, dog, rabbit, or other small pet with you — without extra hassle and even for free.

🐾 Free Travel for Small Pets

Several countries allow small pets in carriers to travel on trains for free. These include:
Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden.
As long as your pet is in a carrier and doesn’t disturb other passengers, there’s no ticket needed. This isn’t a limited-time offer — it’s standard practice supported by many railway companies.

🦮 Guide Dogs Always Travel Free

Across all European countries and all types of public transport, the rule is clear:
guide dogs and officially certified service dogs (such as those assisting individuals with disabilities) always travel for free, regardless of their size or whether they’re in a carrier.

🐶 What About Larger Dogs?

For dogs that can’t fit into a carrier, a separate ticket is usually required. The cost depends on the country and operator — some charge a flat rate, others vary by route.
But there are great exceptions — railway companies offering special rates:

🇮🇹 Trenitalia (Italy)

  • Sunday to Friday – dog ticket: €5
  • Saturdays – just €1
  • Perfect for traveling across Italy.

🇨🇭 SBB (Switzerland)

Swiss Railways offer a daily pass for dogs with a fixed price and unlimited travel for the day.
For frequent travel, monthly and annual passes are also available.
